In life, we must be more Grateful and Thankful than anything else. This is because everything that is given to us is a Gift and a Blessing from God. Every breath we take is a gift given from God and we would not be able to take our next breath if God didn't give it to us.
Ecclesiastes (6: 9) states, "Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless—like chasing the wind". (NLT)
Do you compare what you have to what other's have? Why? What causes the feeling of envy? Do you find yourself competing with others and what they have? Why? For instance, do you say to yourself 'I want that handbag, it looks good on her. I want one for myself'. Or 'Why does she have a boyfriend/fiance/husband and I don't'. Or 'Why am I going through what I'm going through. Why can't I have a life like hers/his?'. Why did she get a better grade and we completed the assignment together?'. These questions and feelings are envious and it is longing for what someone else has or has achieved which you do not have. Proverbs 14:30 states this, "A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones". (NIV). And so it is the Truth.
Those who envy believe that when they have what others have they are happy and content. Happiness and being happy is a Choice. It doesn't come from having what others have or having more than someone. Having what others have or having more than a person does not make you happy! Don't kid yourself that you will be happy when you have more than others. You are as happy as YOU choose to be. Referring back to Ecclesiastes 6: 9 which proclaims, "Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what you don’t have. Just dreaming about nice things is meaningless—like chasing the wind". (NLT)
Look at the needy, those who are homeless, in a hospital and do not have half of what you have. Most are happy and find happiness within their situation because they are alive, breathing and content. It is important to be satisfied with what you have now than to always want what others have.
Be content whatever your circumstance may be. Think about babies; they're always wanting and requiring, but that is out of their control. Now think about yourself and if you've learnt to be content over time. You are in control of your level of content. In Philippians (4: 11), Paul says "...I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances". (NIV). Contentment must be learnt because it is not in our nature to be content. Dwell on the words of Paul in 1 Timothy (6: 6-8), "But godliness with contentment is a great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that". (NIV). We came into this world with nothing and when we die we will have nothing thereafter. Currently, we may need this and that but those things are not what life is about, not at all. So you have to be content with what you've got. Simply, to be content means you don't need more than you have to be happy. What you have now and what you have been given is merely enough.
Like I said earlier within the post, '...being happy is a choice'. God wants us to learn to be happy, grateful, and content despite our situations, by trusting him and having faith that he will provide us with exactly what we need when we need it! By not learning to be content, you are unconsciously saying to yourself that you would never be happy until you have that expensive car, have the mortgage paid off, retire, or get that promotion at work. You'll find yourself wanting more. The reality of it is is that you'll always want more and never be happy.
Prayer:
Dear God, help us to be more content with what we have, to be grateful and not worry about what others have. Lord, please help us to not envy, to be happy with the gifts you have blessed us with. Heavenly Father, help us to remember that satisfaction and happiness does not come from having what others have. We pray to learn to be more content with the things we have. In Jesus' name. Amen!
❥Be grateful for what you have and who you are. Be someone's helping hand, be there to listen, encourage others, build people up, don't tear them down, be nice to others. You just cannot put a price on these things.
